Voldemars Vechi had become one of the youngest Latvians ever to attain officer status in the Czarist Cavalry. But the Great War sparked to life with the consummation of young heroes, the Russian Empire imploding into anarchy, the Latvian people clamoring for independence, and the Kaiser’s German killing machine ravaging the bucolic landscape.

Voldemars finds himself caught between his obligated duty to his conscripted country Russia, and his heart and heritage, Latvia and Telmeni. Voldemars’ destiny is his struggle between his legal loyalty to the Czar, his own country’s rise for independence, his father’s desire for his future, and the welfare of his wife and new born daughter.

Set at the brink of the Russian Revolution and World War I, Telmenu Saimnieks unfolds as a strong character-driven family saga that follows Vldemars and his wife, Otilija, through a world that is falling apart around them.

Telmenu Saimnieks The Lord of Telmeni edition by Guntis Goncarovs Literature Fiction eBooks

Telmenu Saimnieks - The Lord of Telmeni has four things that appeal to me. The first is the work of Guntis Goncarovs, the second is historical fiction, third is genealogy and since reading Norman Davies' massive Vanished Kingdoms, I've been intrigued by the teetering fate of the Balkans. This story compiled of family lore and personal exploration tells of the shameful treatment of Latvia at the hands of the Germans and the Russians around the time of the First World War. Mr. Goncarovs' handling of the matter is intensely personal. His characters thread their way through the dichotomy of shifting alliances balancing loyalty and survival with duty and independence. The fate of the three small and fiercely proud countries that were trapped for decades between the maws of their bellicose and voracious neighbors is a compelling story for anyone with a fondness for history. This tale of the struggles of the Vechi family during a time of crisis is not only moving and unforgettable, it's a fast paced and powerful war story. has four things that appeal to me. Telmenu Saimnieks The Lord of Telmeni edition by Guntis Goncarovs Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Lord of Telmeni is a compelling, richly told tale full of all the romance and anguish of history. The best kind of saga and this is only part one! This is a book you don't want to leave.
I found Telmenu Saimnikies totally captivating. The wartime setting gives the story a feeling that keeps you hanging on every word. I was impressed with the strength of each character and the entire storyline. The joys and sorrows of the families involved make the story feel like it could be happening today. Latvian history was totally new to me and I feel the author did a wonderful job of describing the region as it was in the early 1900's. It is a great book for people who enjoy excellent family stories and war history buffs too!
